If you have a mailbox with your own domain name instead of a third-party one, you’ll be able to use an email software application such as Apple Mail, Outlook or Thunderbird to check and manage your emails. The benefit of using such apps is that you can also take advantage of other features, such as calendars and address books. There are two email protocols that you can select from when you set up the application of your choice to access your email account – POP3 and IMAP. With the first protocol, all messages that are received will be downloaded on your device – desktop or mobile, unless you choose to leave a copy on the mail server. With the second one, the email messages will be displayed locally at your end, but they will stay on the server all the time, so you can set up the email account on numerous devices and see the email messages from any location. You will also be able to examine old emails if there’s a predicament with your Internet connection, which is a big advantage over web-based email services.
